Know what to expect

About the Canadian Citizenship Test

Everything you need to know about the format, content, and how to prepare.

What is the Canadian citizenship test?

The citizenship test is a written exam administered by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It tests your knowledge of Canada's rights and responsibilities, history, values, government, and geography — all covered in the official Discover Canada guide.

Who needs to take it?

Most adults between the ages of 18 and 54 who are applying for Canadian citizenship are required to take the written test. Applicants outside that age range are exempt but still need to demonstrate knowledge of Canada.

What is the test format?

The test has 20 multiple-choice questions and must be completed within 45 minutes. Questions cover Canadian history, values, institutions, symbols, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

What is the passing score?

You need to correctly answer at least 15 out of 20 questions — a minimum score of 75% — to pass. If you do not pass, you may be invited to a hearing with a citizenship officer.

What is the Discover Canada guide?

Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship is the official study guide published by IRCC. All citizenship test questions come directly from this guide. Studying it thoroughly is the single most important step in your preparation.

How should I prepare?

The most effective preparation combines reading the Discover Canada guide with active practice — including timed mock exams, topic-by-topic drills, and flashcards. Discover Canada Prep is built around exactly this approach.

Common questions

Q: Can I take the practice exams for free?
Yes — your first 5 full-length practice exams are completely free. No credit card, no commitment. Upgrade to a paid plan only when you want unlimited access.
Q: Are the practice questions accurate?
All questions are drawn from the official Discover Canada guide — the same source as the real citizenship test. We regularly review content to keep it accurate and up to date.
Q: How long does it take to prepare?
Most applicants prepare over 1–4 weeks. We recommend completing at least 5–10 practice exams and reviewing any topics where your score is below 75%.
Q: What if I fail the practice exam?
Every incorrect answer shows the correct answer and an explanation. Use the Topic Drills to focus on your weak areas before trying again.
