The citizenship test is a written exam administered by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It tests your knowledge of Canada's rights and responsibilities, history, values, government, and geography — all covered in the official Discover Canada guide.
Most adults between the ages of 18 and 54 who are applying for Canadian citizenship are required to take the written test. Applicants outside that age range are exempt but still need to demonstrate knowledge of Canada.
The test has 20 multiple-choice questions and must be completed within 45 minutes. Questions cover Canadian history, values, institutions, symbols, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
You need to correctly answer at least 15 out of 20 questions — a minimum score of 75% — to pass. If you do not pass, you may be invited to a hearing with a citizenship officer.
Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship is the official study guide published by IRCC. All citizenship test questions come directly from this guide. Studying it thoroughly is the single most important step in your preparation.
The most effective preparation combines reading the Discover Canada guide with active practice — including timed mock exams, topic-by-topic drills, and flashcards. Discover Canada Prep is built around exactly this approach.
